ABSTRACT

The cystic masses of the neck are usually benign lesions but they rarely may include malignancy or may be a metastasis of a carcinoma. Ectopic thyroid tissue is frequently seen on the tongue base, thyroglossal duct and around the thyroid gland itself; but also can be seen in unexpected localizations. A 50- year-old male patient is operated due to neck mass of unknown origin after physical and laboratory examinations. Owing to the results of histopathologic study and thyroglobulin staining, the patient is diagnosed as thyroid papillary carcinoma and thyroidectomy is performed. No primary focus is found in the thyroid gland. Therefore the specimen is reexamined and found out that it is a carcinoma erupted from the ectopic thyroid tissue in the branchial cyst. In this article this case is presented with the knowledge of the literature.

ÖZET

Boyundaki kistik kitleler genelde benign lezyonlar olsalar da ender olarak içlerinde malignite barındırabilir veya bir karsinom metastazı olabilirler. Ektopik tiroid dokusu, sıklıkla dil kökü, tiroglossal kanal ve tiroid lobları çevresi gibi yerleşimlerde görülse de ender olarak alışılmadık yerleşimlerde, aberan tiroid dokuları olarak karşımıza çıkabilmektedir. Boyunda kitle nedeniyle başvuran 50 yaşındaki erkek hasta, yapılan fizik ve la-boratuvar muayeneleri sonucu primeri bilinmeyen kitle tanısıyla ameliyat edildi. Histopatolojik inceleme ve tiroglobulin boyama ile tiroid papiller karsinomu tanısı konulması üzerine tam tiroidektomi yapıldı, ancak tiroid dokusunda primer odak bulunamadı. Bunun üzerine tekrar incelenen materyalin brankiyal kist içerisindeki aberan tiroid dokusundan gelişen bir karsinom olduğu görüldü. Bu makalede ender görülen bu olgu literatür eşliğinde sunulmuştur.
